A tune-up on a Volvo is part routine and part detective work. The routine part is the list your owner's manual calls for. The detective part is what we notice while we're in there, because a Volvo tells you a lot about its health if you know where to look.

We take care of the scheduled items, write down what we see, and talk it through with you before anything extra gets done.

What a tune-up covers

  • Spark plugsPulled, read and replaced. The old plugs show us how well the engine has been running.
  • Distributor cap & rotorOn older Volvos these plastic parts crack with age, let moisture in and cause misfires.
  • Oil & oil filterFresh oil and a new filter to keep soot and grit out of the engine.
  • Air filterKeeps dirt out of the carburetor on a classic and the fuel injection on everything newer.
  • Fuel filterStops contaminants before they reach the injectors or carburetor jets.
  • A full look-overBelts, hoses, fluids, leaks and anything else worth knowing about.

Old Volvo or new, "tune-up" means something different

On a carbureted classic it's points, timing and carb adjustment. On a 240 it's plugs, cap, rotor and filters. On a late-model XC it's the plugs, filters and checks in Volvo's maintenance schedule. We work on all of them, so you get the right list for your car.

Good questions

Service & Tune-Up: what people ask us.

How often does my Volvo need a tune-up?

Your owner's manual has the maintenance schedule for your exact car. If you don't have it handy, give us the year and model and we'll tell you what's due.

What happens if you find something else?

We tell you what it is, why it matters and whether it can wait. You decide what gets done and when.

Do you tune up older, carbureted Volvos?

Yes. Every Volvo, any year, including the Amazon, P1800 and other classics.
