Timing belts
Volvo timing belt replacement in Seattle.
The timing belt is a part you replace before it fails. We look up the schedule for your Volvo and do the whole job in one visit.
A sunny day on 15th Ave NWThe timing belt keeps the top half of your engine in step with the bottom half. It works out of sight behind a cover, and it almost never gives a warning before it lets go.
On many Volvo engines, including the five-cylinders in the 850, S70 and V70, a broken belt lets the pistons hit the valves. That turns a scheduled service into an engine repair, which is why this is the one job we tell people not to put off.
What the job includes
- The beltA new timing belt, fitted and timed to Volvo's marks for your engine.
- Tensioner & idler pulleyReplaced with the belt. A worn tensioner can take out a new belt.
- Water pumpOn engines where the timing belt drives the pump, we'll talk with you about doing it at the same visit.
- Cam & crank sealsChecked for leaks while the cover is off, because oil shortens a belt's life.
- Accessory beltThe outer drive belt comes off for this job, so we check it and tell you if it's due.
- It goes on fileThe date and mileage are recorded, so you always know when the next one is due.
Miles or years, whichever comes first
Volvo gives every timing belt an interval in miles and in years. A Volvo that doesn't get driven much still needs its belt on time, because the rubber ages even when the car sits.

Good questions
Timing Belt Replacement: what people ask us.
How often does a Volvo timing belt need replacing?
It depends on the engine and the year. Volvo sets the interval in miles and in years, whichever comes first. Give us your year and model and we'll look it up.
Will I get a warning before it breaks?
Usually not. Timing belts tend to fail without notice, which is why they're replaced on schedule and not by feel.
I bought a used Volvo and don't know if the belt was done. What now?
Bring it in. We'll look for records and check what we can see of the belt. If there's no proof it was done, replacing it is the safe call.
Does my older Volvo have a timing belt?
Most 240s do, and so do the 740 and 940. The pushrod engines in the Amazon, 140 and P1800 use timing gears instead of a belt, and we work on those too.
