These are two different systems with one thing in common: you feel both of them through your hands and feet every time you drive. That makes them easy to notice when something changes, and easy to get used to when you shouldn't.

A clutch wears a little with every start from a stop. Power steering usually goes wrong with a leak or a noise first. Either way, sooner is cheaper.

Drive an automatic? Half of this is still yours

Most Volvos on the road today are automatics with no clutch pedal, so only the power steering half applies. For shifting problems on an automatic, see our transmissions page.

Good questions

Clutch & Power Steering: what people ask us.

How long does a Volvo clutch last?

It depends on how and where the car is driven. City traffic and hills are harder on a clutch than highway miles. A test drive tells us how much yours has left.

My clutch is slipping. Can I keep driving?

Not for long. Slipping only gets worse, and it can overheat the flywheel. Book it in before it leaves you stuck.

Why is my steering suddenly heavy?

Usually it's low fluid from a leak, a slipping belt or a failing pump. Driving on with the pump running dry can ruin it, so bring it in soon.

Do newer Volvos have power steering fluid?

Many late-model Volvos use electric power steering, which has no fluid to leak. If yours feels heavy or shows a steering warning, we diagnose that too.
